Place Vendôme is located in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France; laid out in 1893 as a monument to the glory of the armies of Louis XIV, and is now one of most notable squares in Europe. Situated between the Opera and the Louvre, the dimension of the square is 224 meters long and 213 meters wide, and takes on a unique shape of an octagon, instructing the architectural aesthetics principles of 17th Century France. Later on in the early 19th century, Napoleon I erected the Vendôme Column at the center of the square to commemorate the victory of Austerlitz. A statue of Napoleon was placed atop the column, while the spiraling bas-relief bronze plates were made out of 1250 cannons captured at Austerlitz. Today, Place Vendôme is where top international retailers and high end brands aggregate. Since the “Enlightenment”, European intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th centuries, Europe has assumed the development of political economy and art. On the other side of the world, however, Li Chen has accomplished an artistic style that incorporates Eastern philosophy of Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist traditions with contemporary thought, evincing the idea of “Spirit of the East.” His sculptures will be showcased at the center of Paris surrounded by historical buildings. While such arrangement seems to emphasize the contrast between two different cultures, they are alike in terms of providing new possibilities and interpretations for our cumulative civilization and wisdom in contemporary world. Facilitated by the speed of globalization and technology nowadays, we can thus expect a profound intellectual dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures occurring at Place Vendome.

This exhibition is organized by notable non-profit organization—Global Art Center Foundation (GAC), and Asia Art Center, with full acknowledgement and support from the Vendôme Committee (Comité Vendôme), Ministry of Culture (Ministère de la Culture) and Paris City Council (Conseil municipal). After 18 months of deliberated planning by the curatorial team, which consists of international experts from Paris, Netherlands, Italy and Taipei, the team has successfully overcome various obstacles such as transportation, structural calculation, artwork placement, loading capacity, and weather conditions. in the hope to help Taiwanese artist break free from geographical boundary and to engage in the infinite possibilities of the world.

As the economy of the east begins to rise and attract global attentions, Li Chen’s artworks inspired by Eastern culture and traditions will surely bring to light a visual and spiritual feast in the world.

Li Chen’s spiritual sculptures evoke the subtle skill of the textile weaver in supple, almost mylar balloon like textures, eliciting the soft within. He relies on the unique techniques of traditional Chinese ink lacquering together with gold and silver leaf, revealing a light and utterly relaxed sense, animating a miraculous contrast through its “heavy yet light” presence. Chen Li’s signature aesthetic void, exudes an exuberantly humane spirit and intimacy. In our unsteady era of uncertainty, Li Chen’s works achieve a harmonious sense of presence from impresence, with the Buddhist sense of a necessary absence and the Taoist commitment to instilling one’s vital Qi, replete with the visual semiotic richness of the contemporary arts, to successfully bridge the otherwise alienating cultural distance of the orient and occident, while pulling on the heartstrings with his playful sculpted lullabies.
In 1999, Li Chen had his artwork debut in Taipei. Since 2000, his world tour exhibition started from New York to Chicago, Jerusalem, Copenhagen, Miami, Paris, London, Beijing, Shanghai, Geneva, Singapore, Seoul, etc. In 2007, he became the first Chinese artist to give a solo exhibition in Venice Biennale. In 2008, his work was recognized at a major solo exhibition at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. In 2009, Singapore Art Museum invited him to have his first solo outdoor sculpture exhibition. In 2011 when ultramarathon runner Kevin Yi-jie Lin reached the destination Xi’an in the expedition of “Running the Silk Road”, he lighted up the candle in the hand of Li Chen’s artwork “The Pursuer”. Li Chen, who has not held any exhibitions in Tawan for ten years, continues exploring the possibility of making sculpture with the new spirit of the East. In 2011, he gave his exhibition Greatness of Spirit: Li Chen Premiere Sculpture Exhibition in Taiwan at the Road of Democracy and the Main Plaza at CKS Memorial Hall, kicking off the largest-scale sculpture exhibition ever in Asia to present Li Chen’s fruitful 12-year creation from Taiwan’s landmark to show the radiant bloom of the perfect combination of the spirit of the orient and contemporary vision. In 2012, Li Chen launches his first museum exhibition in USA titled LI CHEN: Eternity and Commoner at Frye Art Museum, Seattle.

Quand des sculptures immenses et en bronze donnent une impression de légèreté, on se dit que l’artiste, Li Chen, a vraiment réussi son pari.
12 sculptures, 12 personnages mi-boudha géant mi-sumo sont installés sur cette place de Paris très select qu’est la Place Vendôme.
Le contraste entre les pavés de cette place, l’architecture de ses batiments et cet art contemporain est une jolie mise en scène.
Le nuage, le vent, le feu, l’or et le sable accompagnent ses monumentales sculptures douces et toute rondes.
Les gens photographient les personnages, veulent apercevoir l’artiste, le voient interviewé par des télévisions chinoises et regardent qui est qui parmi la foule de ce premier jour d’expo.
Le oeuvres de Li Chen vont rester jusqu’au 29 septembre et elles méritent le détour!

Né en 1963, Li Chen est l’un des sculpteurs contemporains d’origine chinoise dont le travail novateur a été reconnu dans le monde entier. Son style a réussi à s’affranchir du poids des traditions tout en s’inspirant et réinterprétant les classiques chinois bouddhistes et taoïstes. Son tour de force a été de leur insuffler un goût de renouveau en y infiltrant sa vision contemporaine imprégnée du concept bouddhique de “pleine conscience”. Cette méditation a ainsi placé sentiments et émotions au cœur des œuvres avec le plus grand des naturels et sans trahir les références. Les principes esthétiques sur lesquels reposent les sculptures de Li Chen basent non seulement sur un éclectisme des cultures orientales et le langage artistique occidental, mais aussi sur des idées pour rajeunir et transcender des milliers d’années de traditions chinoises avec un regard contemporain.

Ce syncrétisme forme ainsi un ensemble novateur et singulier en mêlant à la fois le massif et la légèreté. Le travail de Li Chen peut également se voir comme une forme de thérapie par l’art où ses œuvres recèlent un espace spirituel. Celle-ci prônerait que la richesse et la joie passent par les plaisirs simples de la vie et que l’humour est une forme métaphorique d’engagement. L’espoir nourri est de partager cette prise de conscience avec le spectateur et de lui faire apprécier les éléments spirituels par lesquels la création a abouti.

李真繼2011年在中正紀念堂舉辦亞洲空前規模的大展後，2013年9月2日起將受邀於法國巴黎凡登廣場(Place Vendôme)舉辦為期長達一個月的戶外雕塑展，宣告歐洲巡迴展正式開跑！本展將於巴黎市中心有著「巴黎珠寶箱」美譽的「凡登廣場」舉辦，囊括12件李真創作中最具代表性的大型雕塑，尺寸最大者高達9米，涵蓋1998年至2010年的四個重要創作系列。

李真，2007年於「藝術界奧林匹克」的威尼斯雙年展(52nd International Art Exhibition–La Biennale di Venezia)舉辦個展，其後經歷北京、新加坡、上海、邁阿密、紐約等許多國際城市的展出，2012年初接受美國西雅圖弗萊伊美術館邀請於創館六十周年慶做出特別計畫「不生不滅 – 千歲與草民」。此次2013年，李真將再飛往歐洲藝術重鎮「巴黎」推出戶外雕塑個展，其具有渾厚東方底蘊、融合當代藝術極簡風格的雕塑，將與凡登廣場相互輝映，在西方歷史建築與東方文化雕塑的對話與激盪下，相信此展將會驚豔歐洲所有的參觀者。

本展由歐洲著名非營利性機構「全球藝術中心基金會」(Global Art Center Foundation)與亞洲藝術中心協同策劃，這次展覽得到凡登廣場委員會、巴黎文化部及市政府的全力支持，巴黎、荷蘭、義大利、台北四地合組的國際專業團隊經過1年半的時間籌備，克服巨型作品運輸、結構、風阻、古蹟承重等許多難題，使台灣藝術家能夠再次跨出地域的侷限、走向國際的無限。

在東方經濟實力逐漸增強而引發全球關注的同時，李真充滿能量的作品，將使東方深厚的文化底蘊與豐沛的人文活力，在國際發光。

凡登廣場(Place Vendôme)位於巴黎市中心的第一區，由法王路易十四下令興建，於1893年完成，外型宏偉壯觀，線條勻稱完美，加上全球獨一無二的八角形狀，足以代表十七世紀法國建築藝術的美學。十九世紀初葉，拿破崙在奧斯特利茨戰役凱旋而歸，回國後在廣場加建「凡登之柱」祝捷，鑄造這根巨柱的青銅正是來自奧地利敗軍留下的大炮。時至今日，充滿神秘魅力的凡登廣場是法國頂級飯店、珠寶、手錶及精品牌聚集的地方。歐洲繼17世紀啟蒙運動以來，歐洲強權在政治經濟與藝術文化上，獨步全球；而李真融會東方思維，創作出承續傳統氣韻、又富時代新意的藝術，貫串中華文化特有的宇宙觀與儒、道、佛思想，李真雕塑所代表的「新東方精神」，即將矗立巴黎市區，為百年古蹟建築所環繞。東西方藝術的並陳，凸顯兩者歷史文化背景的差異，然而相同的是，它們都是幾個世紀累積而來的高度文明，在現代人手底重新賦予當代面貌，在全球化所創造的契機下，凡登廣場將有一場東西方文化的深度對談。

李真，1963，台灣。涉獵佛學道家，融入自我攝心之情感，更結合當代思惟，他捨實用工藝而投入純藝術創作，使其創作風格成功脫離了傳統的束縛，呈現渾然天成的效果。李真對人性有深度的體悟，因而作品的面貌在禪意中流露一股活潑天真的氣息。他認為，生命終究因異離而失落，時間會沉澱深處的哀愁，於是他透過藝術精神療傷，在俗世中尋找樂土，在作品中創造靈性空間，用幽默詼諧的方式暗喻世事，希望欣賞者能察覺其中的精神元素。

李真在雕塑表面製作出細膩而溫潤的質感，運用中國特殊之墨色生漆手法、按金、按銀的技巧，展現雕塑的輕盈與大自在感，呈現「既重又輕」的奇妙對比。李真獨創的「虛空」美學，散發出人文溫度與醇厚的親切感。在浮動與不安定的年代中，李真的作品卻「任真而境外」，透過佛學的「空」與道家的「氣」，並利用當代藝術的視覺語彙，成功地跨越東西文化差異，扣人心弦。 1999年，李真作品首次於台北曝光，他自2000年起陸續在紐約、芝加哥、耶路撒冷、哥本哈根、邁阿密、巴黎、倫敦、北京、上海、日內瓦、新加坡、首爾等城市展出，他更是於2007年威尼斯雙年展首位舉辦個展的華人藝術家，2008年於中國美術館舉辦大型個展，2009年則受邀於新加坡國家美術館舉辦戶外大展【李真：精神‧身體‧靈魂】。2011年超馬選手林義傑「擁抱絲路」長征抵達終點西安時，點燃《追燭》。十年未在台發表的李真，持續探索新東方雕塑的可能，2011年並於中正紀念堂民主大道、兩廳院廣場舉行【大氣：李真台灣大型雕塑首展】，啟動亞洲有史以來最壯闊的雕塑展，從台灣地標向世界展示十二年的創作成果，綻放東方氣韻與當代視界的完美結合。2012年2月，李真受邀於西雅圖弗萊伊美術館，舉辦他在美國的首次美術館個展–造化之「不生不滅」：千歲與草民。
